Skin lifting refers to non-surgical treatments that tighten and firm the face and neck by delivering controlled energy below the skin surface to stimulate new collagen. The two main energy families are HIFU (high-intensity focused ultrasound) and RF (radiofrequency). Ultherapy is a HIFU device that focuses ultrasound to precise depths, while devices such as Shurink Universe deliver HIFU at higher shot counts; RF platforms such as Thermage, Oligio, Onda and Titanium heat the dermis with radiofrequency energy instead.

HIFU works by creating tiny coagulation points at fixed depths (commonly 1.5mm, 3.0mm and 4.5mm), reaching the same SMAS layer that surgeons address in a facelift, which makes it well suited to sharpening the jawline and lifting sagging tissue. RF spreads heat more broadly through the dermis, which suits overall skin tightening and texture. Thread lifting is a separate, mechanical approach in which absorbable threads physically reposition tissue. A licensed physician chooses the device, depth and shot count based on skin thickness and the area treated; the right choice differs from person to person.

A typical HIFU or RF session takes 30–60 minutes. After cleansing and mapping the area, the physician applies the handpiece and delivers energy line by line; most patients feel brief heat or a prickling sensation, and numbing cream or cooling is used for comfort. There is generally no surgical downtime — mild redness, slight swelling or temporary tenderness can occur and usually settle within hours to a couple of days, so most patients return to normal activity the same day. An initial tightening can be felt early, but the main lifting effect builds gradually over 2–3 months as new collagen forms, and results typically last about 1–2 years.
